ROB JOHNS

Where Art & Science Converge

As an artist and professional ecologist, I bring competing imperatives to my oil paintings.

Science is compelled to fill all knowledge gaps with explanation; art intentionally leaves spaces into which the viewer can bring something of themselves.

That tension is at the heart of my work.

  • Oil painting of a moose submerging in water at dusk, Atlantic Canada wildlife art by Rob Johns
  • Oil painting looking upward through a forest canopy toward the sun, rendered in pointillist style. Tall tree trunks converge toward bright sunlight filtering through dense foliage in reds, greens, yellows, and blues
  • Oil painting of a bee on a flower in morning light, forest insect ecology art by Rob Johns
  • Oil painting of a black-capped chickadee perched on a branch, Atlantic Canada bird art by Rob Johns
  • Oil painting of a grizzly bear emerging from water, close-up wildlife portrait by Rob Johns
  • Oil painting of a dragonfly with luminous wings, forest insect art by Rob Johns
  • Oil painting of a largemouth bass underwater, Atlantic Canada freshwater fish art by Rob Johns
  • Oil painting of a barn owl portrait referencing dawn and dusk activity patterns, forest ecology art by Rob Johns
